Fontainebleau Las Vegas opens, catering to the luxury market

The Strip welcomed the $3.7 billion Fontainebleau Las Vegas, its newest luxury brand, Wednesday.

With much pomp and fanfare and Justin Timberlake scheduled to perform, the Fontainebleau celebrated Las Vegas’s comeback story of the century. Shortly after the 67-story resort was topped off in 2008, Fontainebleau became a victim of the Great Recession, then a bankruptcy in 2009. It came full circle back to its original owners, Fontainebleau Development, the group behind the historic Fontainebleau Miami Beach. After a morning ceremony, it was scheduled to open to the public by midnight Wednesday.

Durango Casino & Resort Hosts Grand Opening

At 10 a.m. local time December 5, the $780 million Durango Casino & Resort opened its doors for the first time after 19 months of planning and development.

The off-Strip resort, located along the I-215 Beltway, will cater primarily to the locals market, as is usually the case for properties operated by parent company Red Rock Resorts. The company has vowed to double its Las Vegas portfolio by 2030, with Durango being a key piece of that plan.

F1 delivers on Las Vegas expectations after issues in lead-up to race

The Las Vegas Grand Prix delivered “one of the most spirited events of the season” as it was “critical for F1 to deliver a good race Saturday,” according to Jenn Fryer of the AP. F1’s third stop in the U.S. had been “lambasted” for its “emphasis on becoming a neon extravaganza.” Tickets were “expensive, hotels along the famed Strip hiked their prices” and the sporting element was “overshadowed by everything from celebrities, musical acts and a myriad of Elvis impersonators roaming the paddock.”

Resort leaders concur: F1 was best Las Vegas event in history

As the Strip got back to its usual bumper-to-bumper traffic Sunday, hours after cars were racing on it at 200 mph, resort executives affirmed what they had predicted all along — that Southern Nevada appears to have had the best week financially in its history, thanks to the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Executives among the estimated 315,000 people who attended the Saturday night spectacle said the event went better than they had hoped, that hotels and casinos were filled on a week that traditionally is one of the worst on the calendar and that they can’t wait to do it all again next year.

Las Vegas is prepared to welcome international high rollers and the jet set when it hosts the Formula One circuit this week, and operators and analysts are excited about what it will mean for the bottom line on a traditionally slow weekend before Thanksgiving and for years to come.

Local residents and employees on and around the Strip, on the other hand, have had to endure unending disruptions from construction and interminable traffic over the last several months that have soured them on the Las Vegas Grand Prix, which is scheduled in Las Vegas through 2032.

Music festivals bring crowds, higher weekend room rates

Two major music festivals in Las Vegas are driving up hotel room prices for the remaining inventory as the industry addresses any lingering effects of the MGM Resorts International’s cybersecurity breach that took nine days to resolve.

Some hotel rooms are still available at 44 resort properties around the Las Vegas Valley with an average price of $343, according to a survey of Hotels.com on Thursday morning. That’s higher than the average daily room rate of roughly $187 for September 2022, according to data from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
